Week 4 Light (East)
How can Light have a moment?
How can Light be a moment?
How can Light be the story?
As a Director, how does Light help the story?
Light can contrast what is physically happening. It can be a standalone moment of what Chekhov wrote or it can contradict it. It can be an internal moment for an actor or purely a directorial invention.
You are not a designer. You are a director

GAEV: "You haven't forgotten, have you?"
LYUBOV ANDREEVNA: "O, my childhood, my innocence! Once I slept in this very nursery, I'd look out on the orchard, right from here, and happiness would awaken with me, every morning, every morning, and look, it's all the same, nothing has changed. White, all white! O, my orchard! After the dark, dreary autumn, the cold winter, you're young again, blooming with joy, the heavenly angels have not forsaken you...If only this terrible weight could be lifted from my soul, if only I could forget my past!"
GAEV: "Yes, and the orchard will be sold to pay off our debts, strange, isn't it..."
LYUBOV ANDREEVNA: "Look, there's my mother, walking through the orchard...all in white! There she is."
GAEV: "Where?"

Provocation: Any scene or moment from The Cherry Orchard. Light.
Statement: When I think of Time, I do not think of Light. When I think of Light, I do not think of Time. Yet when we say "her light has gone out", we speak of the end of Time. Darkness and death, the end of Life. In this Act 2 Lybov monologue, I explore an interpretation taken from Nikos Karathano's 2015 production. Lybov searches, strains and cries. She may deceive with lightness but Light eludes her. I think this moment as drowning, how she might be holding a searching torch piercing through darkness, and how her light might have slowly disappeared as her son watched her, both of them sinking into darkness.
