Week 3: Sound (East)

Sound can be incredibly evocative and suggest Time and Space without the need for visuals.

Sound can be narrative. Sound can be recognizable.

Sound enters our bodies. Unlike any other external stimuli, Sound actually has to enter our bodies and is felt and understood internally. So Sound is physical. It enters our brains and produces images, memory, story, mood, and atmosphere.

Sound can be Diegetic or Non-Diegetic. Live or Recorded. Literal or Figurative

Sound is Tempo, Pitch, Dynamic, Silence, Timbre, Shape, Gesture, Architecture, Repetition, Kinesthetic Response.

Emotional, Atmospheric, or Quotidian.

Sound can NOT fit.

Sound can comment on or be an obstacle to.

Provocation: Any scene or moment from The Cherry Orchard. Sound.

Statement: If I had to give up one sense, where would Sound rank for me? Sound permeates and affects. To create sound, there must be a source, there must also be a receiver. There's also the oscillator and the oscillated. There is an encoding that happens, and decoding that happens. Ephemeral as it is, Sound is energy embodied. Take cues from your inner scape, receive the clangs from your outer scape... I couldn't give up sound as a sense. Here is one sonic moment of Yermolai Lophakin.
