Statement:

Act 3: If Time is a relationship between two moments, a singular note has no meaning. It ends. But if a second note starts, duration is constructed. The relationship between three notes structures a rhythm, a tempo; a fourth suggests balance, a fifth destabilises, the six returns some order. Sequential repetition creates a time signature, the tempo, or rate that propels us to the end. Time is after all suffering: a beginning always has an end (Carlo Rovelli, The Order of Time). In the most methodical of means, Time seems to suspend in Maurice Ravel’s Bolero, and the crash at the end almost surprising, as if the pull of gravity created by its growing mass causes it to collapse into itself. The family living on borrowed Time dances, a vain attempt to suspend between the lift and drop, before Time collects its ransom.

Sketched for the Theatre of Others Composition Workshop 2021 (conducted via Zoom).

Week 2 - Time

A journey through The Cherry Orchard

by Jun

Annie - Act 2 - Living Room (snippet 1) This is what it looks like when you sign into the virtual house. You have complete freedom to navigate between the various [break-out] rooms of the house, including:

Living Room - the events of Act 2

Balcony - a view of the Cherry Orchard

Kitchen - Firs does dishes and makes unappetizing coffee

CCTV - view from the street until a tramp steals the CCTV

Pool - it's not Grisha

Annie - Act 2 - Living Room (snippet 2) I got a friend to record their screen as they navigated between the various rooms of the house at their own pace. Unfortunately, this means you're now looking at a screen of someone else exercising their agency and determining their own control over time/duration in each scene. Feel free to scrub through this video, adding your own tempo on top of theirs!

Rooms:

Living Room - the events of Act 2

Balcony - a view of the Cherry Orchard

Kitchen - Firs does dishes in time to some Russian folk music and makes unappetizing coffee

CCTV - view from the street until a tramp steals the CCTV camera

Pool - it's not Grisha

Recording limitations vs. actual experience:

- choppy playback

- no audio from some rooms

- can't see the breakout room names or the mouse pointer as they select rooms

- can't see their chat screen
